Imagine the most badass group of zombie killers in the world. Who are they and where are they stationed?
If you said anything other than a group of Cockneys in a retirement center in East London, you are dead wrong.
The 2012 film Cockneys vs. Zombies is just what it’s name suggests. Because if any demographic can hold their own against the terrors of a zombie outbreak, it’s East London’s Cockney community. The film follows two orphaned brothers and their cousin as they attempt to rob a bank for money to save their grandad’s retirement home. Trouble is, they’ve timed the robbery just as a zombie outbreak hits the city.
What follows is the typical “I have to save my loved ones” plotline, but the film does it with enough panache, well-timed humor, car chases, explosions, giant stashes of illegal weaponry, and old people being seriously kickass that it’s still an excellent movie in its own right. The film may even have the most well matched zombie chase in all of cinema history. Check it out and decide for yourself – we don’t want to give too much away.
Cockneys doesn’t delve into the social mores of most current zombie films, and thus avoids being bogged down by questions of morality and politics. It’s content to be a Guy Ritchie-style shoot-em-up zombie film with just enough heart to help you root for the main characters as they take out as many zombies as they can. And it’s a better movie for sticking to that formula.
Speaking of Guy Ritchie, fans will definitely recognize old Brick Top in the film. Alan Ford plays the grandad. And if that isn’t enough of a reason to check out the film, then we don’t know what is.
Cockneys vs. Zombies didn’t make a big splash on this side of the pond, but it’s definitely worth a watch. And if you happen to follow archaeology news (because, who doesn’t?) then you’ll get a kick out of the source of the outbreak, as well.
